Some Great Ideas For Father’s Day by Art Gib
Sometimes it’s so hard to think of what to get Dad for Father’s Day, isn’t it? He always says he doesn’t need anything, but it seems so “not enough” to just hand him a card and give him a hug every year. On the other hand, when you want to give a gift, you have no idea what might be right or what he might appreciate. After all, a man can only wear so many ties, right? Of course, the best way to show him you love him is to give of your time. Here are some other great ways to say I Love You to Dad in a thoughtful way.
First of all, sit down and make a list of all of the activities your dad enjoys: is he a painter? Is he a gardener? Is he a craftsman or a sports nut or a couch potato?
Next, you’ll want to consider his personality. Is he the sentimental type who likes to sit and reflect on the past? Is he a doer and a goer who would rather be cruising in Alaska or looking for cheetahs in Africa? Can he not get enough of talking about his grandkids? All of these factors should be taken into consideration when choosing a gift, and any ideas contained therein should be altered to fit your dad’s own personality and interests.
– If your father is a sentimentalist and is the “man who has everything,” why not give him an unusual look back at his life that he can hang on his wall? You can order vintage and commemorative stamps online of just about anything. You could choose five stamps that commemorate your father’s experiences, interests, or hobbies such as: Korean War, business, the year he was born, reading, or jazz music. Have the stamps matted and framed and a special inscription put on the frame.
– Does your gardener father just love his grandkids? Have your children create special stepping stones for him to lay in his favorite spot in the garden. All craft stores carry ready-to-use stepping stone kits in various price ranges depending on the look you want. The kids can immortalize their handprints in them, write a special message, or decorate them with glass pebbles or stones.
– Is your Dad just crazy about the local college team? How about arranging for lunch with one of the assistant (or even the head) coaches in exchange for your making a hefty donation to the school’s sports program? Giving a special experience to Dad that he would never do himself will give him a great memory to last a lifetime and something to brag to his friends about besides!
– Does your Dad love to shop but you never seem to get him the right thing? Insert a prepaid credit card into his greeting card and let him go wild buying whatever he’d like, guilt free!
– Have each of the grown children in your Dad’s family write down at least 10 special memories they have of him on coordinated post-it sized papers you have provided. Put them in a specially marked container with his name on it and have him open it on Father’s Day. The container could be mailed if you all live far apart. But if you have the good fortune of being able to all be together on Dad’s special day, be sure to have him read them aloud in front of everyone. It will be a day he’ll never forget.
